my 2021 entertainment favorites (+ spotify playlist!)

The year is coming to an end! I’ve done a good amount of things this years. Not a lot happened, but I did get to discover new faves in the entertainment industry. I rewatched many shows, binged Leonardo DiCaprio movies, and listened to great music on Spotify.

I thought I’d share this years top 5 faves in television, movies, and music – and included a Spotify playlist. Fair warning, I do not have cable and instead have Disney+, Netflix, and Hulu. Feel free to comment what’s gotten you hooked, below.

television

Superstore, NBC – available to stream on Hulu

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Follows a bunch of employees at a big box store (Cloud 9) and their day-to-day work lives.

Has a lot of real world social commentary about working conditions in America.

Show is finished; has 6 seasons.

Why I Love This Show

It was my fourth time rewatching the show. I found this after I finished Brooklyn Nine-Nine and fell in love. It’s hilarious! Right off the bat, you’re laughing. As well, I love the sense of family and community the characters portray throughout the series.

Squid Game, Netflix

Children’s games meets billions of dollars in a twisted, gore-filled series.

Lots of gore/violence. Not suitable for younger audiences, among others.

Season 1 is out; season 2 coming soon.

Show is in Korean.

Why I Love This Show

I heard about all the hype and decided to give it a try. It was worth it. Each episode I held my breath as they went through the games. I almost didn’t get through the 7th episode! It was tantalizing and like nothing I had ever seen before. I could not stop watching.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Disney+

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Falcon and The Winter Solider (from Marvel’s Captain America trilogy) team up to take down a new group of vigilantes.

Has a lot of real world commentary about race and touches on mental health.

Show is finished; has 1 season.

Why I Love This Show

The Captain America trilogy is my fave from Marvel and Bucky is my fave character. So, I had to watch. I love Sam and Bucky’s story lines so much – both individually and together – and how they have such a solid place in the world without Steve.

The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu

In a dystopian, super religious world, women are made to forcibly bare children and serve couples who are unable to have kids.

Very heavy/mature themes. Not suitable for younger audiences, among others.

Season 4 is out; season 5 coming soon.

Why I Love This Show

This is such a riveting and captivating show that makes your heart ache. Yet, June’s fight keeps me glued, as well as the haunting truth that we’re just a few steps behind the show coming to life. I think I cry every episode.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Money Heist (La casa de papel), Netflix

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A man going by The Professor (El Profesor) recruits several people to carry out a bank heist at the Royal Mint of Spain.

Lots of violence as series goes on. Not suitable for younger audiences, among others.

Show is finished; has 5 seasons.

Show is in Spanish.

Why I Love This Show

A heist? Action? Really cool names like Professor and using city names? You root for the gang from day one and fall in love with their familial relationships and their emotions, whether happiness or grief, seeps through the screen to you.

Notes:

  • The Falcon and The Winter Soldier does lack in an overall story line which is why I had to knock off a star. I love the character arcs and their stories, but wish the overall F+WS vs. Flag Smashers storyline was more defined. I wonder if an extra episode or two would have done the trick.
  • And if you’re into Marvel, WandaVision is amazing, too!

Rating: 2 out of 5.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

pay to watch

Rating: 5 out of 5.
A Plastic Ocean (2016)

Rating: 5 out of 5.
Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)
not rated
available to stream on Netflix

Rating: 4 out of 5.
Shutter Island (2010)
rated R

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Notes:

  • The Interview is genuinely a terrible movie and maybe shouldn’t have been made but it’s so funny that I watch when I need a good laugh. It’s impossible not to.
  • Cowspiracy is a deeply riveting and eyeopening film but there is animal violence that churned my stomach. I had to take a pause from the movie to compose myself.
  • And complements to The Great Gatsby (2013) that I’ve watched more times than I can count but didn’t want there to be too many Leonardo DiCaprio movies listed.
